Review of Equations of Motion from Classic & Sports Car - February 2007

Book of the Month

"Don"t let the dry title of this 650-page thumper put you off a remarkable autobiography by the brilliant engineer "Bill" Milliken. Anyone captivated by the design of the wacky Camber Car that was the talk of the 2002 Goodwood Festival of Speed will covet this fascinating read. His eight-decade ride from home-built aircraft flown on the beaches of Maine to high-tech investigations into vehicle dynamics that had GM, Goodyear, Lotus and Chapparal queuing up for research data is a humbling read. As well as a brilliant, investigating mind, the ever-young Milliken wasn"t short of the right stuff to test his own theories. Best of all, this 95-year old has great recall and a fine writing style to relate his amazing life. There seems no limit to his talents. As well as colourful racing experiences with Miller 4WD, Bugattic Type 54 and the ex-Archie Butterworth Steyr-powered special, Milliken spans his extensive aviation work, including the sensational "flying-wings", sorting out the Vought Corsair fighter and test-flying WW2 Boeing bombers. This eventful life story is vividly illustrated with photographs including wonderful images of his early cyclecars and gliders, plus patents, letters and engineering drawings. A must for all car and aircraft enthusiasts.
